Unfortunately, I was not able to participate in this issue. Would I had known the theme was MLK—an opportunity to maybe write about Jay-Z/Kanye’s great album Watch the Throne, with its penultimate gesture of humility to the legacy of Dr. King. But time did not permit (coming soon, though: Me on Diana Ross on MLK).
Fortunately, the issue is not lacking in any way (shape or form). Armond (“Belief with Wings”) and Gregory (“Monuments to King: Art Meets Politics”) give us the two best pieces to date in CityArts—THESE ARE MUST-READS! And it’s my favorite cover so far, continuing the mag’s focus on the human face. As Janusz Kaminski said: “That’s where the mystery starts.”
